Background
The Pupil Premium was introduced by the Government in April 2011 and consists of a funding allowance which is allocated directly to schools. It is intended to benefit children from low income families and the premium is provided to support these pupils in reaching their potential.

Pupils entitled to free school meals are used as an indicator for Pupil Premium and a fixed amount of money is allocated to schools based on the number of pupils registered for free school meals. Eligibility also extends to pupils who have received free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as Ever 6 Free School Meals measure). It is also available for the children of forces families and for children who were adopted after 30th December 2005 and those who left care under a Special Guardianship Order or Residence Order.

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility. However, schools are held accountable for how they use the additional funding to support eligible pupils.
