We are extremely proud of each and every one of our children and the progress that they make from their individual starting points - across all areas of the curriculum as well as personally, socially, emotionally and with regard to their effort and attitudes to learning.
Reception performance
A good level of development in Reception means that children are meeting the expected milestones in key areas of learning and development by the end of the school year. This includes strong progress in communication and language, personal, social and emotional development, physical development, literacy, and mathematics. Children achieving a good level of development are confident, curious learners who can express themselves clearly, interact positively with others, manage basic self-care, and demonstrate early reading, writing, and number skills. This foundation sets them up for continued success as they move into Key Stage 1.

Year 1 performance
The Phonics Screening Check is a short, statutory assessment that takes place in Year 1 to assess how well children are learning to decode words using phonics—a key skill in learning to read. The check involves children reading a series of real and made-up (nonsense) words aloud to a teacher in a one-to-one setting. This helps teachers identify whether children have developed secure phonics knowledge and can apply it confidently. The check is designed to be a positive and supportive experience, and results help schools provide any extra support children may need with their reading as they continue through their education.

Telford Infant School has received a letter from the Minister for Education congratulating us on our 'outstanding achievement' in the 2023 Phonics Screening check. With 97% of pupils in year 1 meeting the expected standard in the check our school is in the top 3% of all primary schools in the country. Please follow the link below to view a copy of our letter.
In Year 2, children build on the strong foundations laid in earlier years as they work towards the end of Key Stage 1. The learning goals focus on developing greater independence, confidence, and depth in key areas such as reading, writing, maths, and science. Children are encouraged to read fluently and with understanding, write clearly for different purposes using correct grammar and punctuation, and solve mathematical problems involving number, shape, space, and measurement. They also begin to ask scientific questions, make observations, and record their findings. In addition to academic progress, Year 2 supports children's personal and social development, helping them become more resilient, responsible, and ready for the transition to Key Stage 2.
